How to Prevent Staph Infections in MMA: The ATT Protocol

A staph infection doesn't care how good your guard is. For MMA fighters, grapplers, and anyone spending time on shared mats, skin infections like Staphylococcus aureus and MRSA are a constant occupational hazard, one that can pull you out of training for weeks at a time. In a sport where consistency is everything, losing two or three weeks to a preventable skin infection is a real competitive cost. Step 1: Shower as soon as possible after training

Every minute you wait after leaving the mat, bacteria have more opportunity to colonize open skin. Sweat creates a warm, nutrient-rich environment that allows bacteria to multiply quickly. The goal is to shower within 30 minutes of ending your session, not after you've driven home, eaten, and settled in.

Step 2: Use a body wash formulated for skin prone to irritation

Standard soap and body wash are designed to remove surface dirt and odor. They are not formulated to address the microbial load that accumulates during grappling. A standard bar soap or drugstore body wash may remove surface bacteria, but it does little to address the elevated microbial environment on skin with even minor open wounds. It's also worth paying attention to areas that don't look obviously abraded. What to Do if You Suspect a Staph Infection

If you notice a suspicious bump, raised red area, or warm patch of skin after training, do not drain it yourself. This is one of the most common mistakes athletes make, and it can push the infection deeper or spread bacteria to the surrounding skin. See a physician. MRSA in particular requires appropriate medical treatment and, in some cases, culture and sensitivity testing to identify which antibiotic will be effective.

Be transparent with your training partners and coach. Continuing to train with an active skin infection puts the people around you at risk. Most gyms have policies requiring athletes to stay off the mat until infections are cleared, and those policies exist for good reason. A culture that normalizes flagging skin issues early keeps the whole team healthier.
