The 2-Minute Lather Rule: Why Dwell Time Is the Secret to CLn SportWash

Most athletes who experience recurring skin infections after training are not skipping showers. They are showering immediately after practice, using what seems like a reasonable body wash, and still ending up with staph, folliculitis, or persistent skin irritation that won't clear up. The problem, in most of these cases, is not whether they showered. It is how long their cleanser stayed on their skin. One practical note: Two minutes is longer than most people intuitively think. Set a timer for the first few times. Most athletes who think they are lathering for two minutes are actually lathering for about 30 to 45 seconds.

Why Rinsing Too Fast Undercuts the Whole Point

Rinsing before the two-minute window closes does more than shorten the dwell time; it removes the active ingredient before it has finished working. The result:

  • Bacterial load on the skin is partially disrupted but not adequately addressed

  • Partially disrupted bacterial populations can still colonize open follicles and abraded skin

  • Those bacteria can still transfer to training partners in the next session
